IIT-B honours alumnus who designed rupee symbol

On its 52nd Foundation Day, the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) conferred honours on its faculty and alumni. Chief guest Gopalkrishna Gandhi, chairman of the Dandi Memorial Committee, presented the awards at the Victor Menezes Convention Centre on Thursday. This year, the institute i
ntroduced the Young Alum Award and presented it to Uday Kumar, who had designed the rupee symbol for India.

“With more and more young people achieving new heights we decided build our links with them and recognise their achievements,” said Devang Khakhar, director of the institute.

This year, IIT-B presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Professor Dipan Ghosh, who has spent more than 35 years at the institute.

Some of the other awardees were Dr Jayant Sathye, senior scientist and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, US, for his outstanding contribution to research in the areas of climate change and renewable energy. Dr Roop Jyoti, vice-chairman, Jyoti Group of Business, Nepal, was presented an award for entrepreneurial achievements and contributions to public service.

The award, which was constituted in 2001 for retired faculty, has not been given for the last three years because no faculty member has retired.
