India’s premier technical institute, the IIT s, will now make all its engineering courses and lectures available for downloads to students, even on their mobile phones.

The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) is the country’s largest technical knowledge dissemination programme.

HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday launched the national video server which will enable easy downloads of video lectures off the Internet.

Students can access the lectures of IITs, IISc and NITs from the NPTEL website http://www.nptel.iitm.ac.in and from YouTube http://www.youtube.com/iit . The 125 courses available include lectures both in web and in video format in electrical, mechanical, civil and computer science engineering.

Each course, during the first phase, will offer around 40 hours of lectures delivered by the country’s best teachers from different IITs and the IISc.

“NPTEL is now the world’s largest electronic repository of video courses and has also attained the status of being the world’s most highly-viewed higher technical education portal accessed by users in India and other countries,” Sibal said.
