MUMBAI: Over 30 years ago, a quiet Victor completed his electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay ( IIT-B). And early in the last decade, in 2007, he gifted $3 million to his alma mater to set up a convention centre, a chic building that could house an auditorium, lecture halls, research labs and facilities where the best minds can sit, ponder, discuss and work on ideas.

Describing his act of philanthropy, the former senior vice-chairperson of Citigroup, Victor Menezes said: “This is a small way to say thank you.” The Victor Menezes Convention Centre has been constructed at a cost of Rs 40 crore: Rs 13.5 crore came as a gift from the former BTech grad, the remaining funds were pumped in by the institute. The centre will be inaugurated on Saturday by human resource development minister Kapil Sibal.

“I received priceless education from IIT, Bombay,” said Menezes.

“I hope the convention centre will help support an exchange of ideas and intellectual advancement at IIT, Bombay.”

The convention centre has an auditorium that can hold 380 people, 16 lecture halls, a VIP lounge and a conference hall. Apart from the center’s inauguration, Saturday will also be the 40th reunion of the Class of 1970.
