EDUCATION TIMES RECENTLY ORGANISED A COUNSELLING SESSION ON ‘A REVOLUTION IN IIT JEE PREPARATION – THE INTEGRATED APPROACH’. PRAVEEN TYAGI, MANAGING DIRECTOR, IIT-IAN’S PACE FIELDED SEVERAL QUESTIONS BY STUDENTS PREPARING FOR THIS COMPETITIVE EXAM

QWHAT IS THE IDEAL WAY TO PREPARE FOR THE IIT JEE IN ORDER TO MAXIMISE PERFORMANCE?

Students must select a combination of good teachers, a comprehensive and welldeveloped study material and a peer group of dedicated students. When selecting an individual or an institute for mentoring, one must keep in mind the depth of experience and a proven track record, as only the experienced can ensure that the student’s time is used efficiently. Choices must be made based upon previous results, feedback from senior students and the peer group that they will interact with at the institute.

Q IS IT TRUE THAT ONLY AN ABOVE AVERAGE PERFORMER CAN CRACK THE IIT JEE?

Contrary to popular belief, the IIT-JEE is not a tough exam, albeit a competitive one. Complete conceptual clarity is required in each of the subjects (physics, chemistry and maths) for students to secure a good rank in the IIT JEE. To ensure the fundamentals are strong, students must start preparing early on, probably from class eight. If one hasn’t already, then starting preparations as soon as possible is recommended. If one
has their basics in place, it is not difficult even for average performers to crack the exam.
Q WILL MY PREPARATION FOR IIT JEE HELP ME BE PREPARED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIADS AS WELL?
Preparation for IIT JEE, if managed appropriately with the right guidance can also ensure preparation for International Olympiads. Students aspiring to do well in the International Olympiads should have complete conceptual clarity in the subject of their interest. Not only theory, but practicals are an important part of Olympiads, so scientific application of concepts is equally important.

Q WHAT ARE HYBRID COLLEGES?

Hybrid Colleges are junior science colleges for class 11 and 12 that offer integrated preparation for board exams and competitive exams such as IIT JEE, AIEEE, MHT CET, Olympiads, all under one roof. At present there are eight hybrid colleges in Mumbai affiliated to the HSC Board and all of them offer vocational science seats (computer science and electrical maintenance). These colleges allow students to prepare for multiple exams in a synchronised manner and under one roof, ensuring that students minimise wastage of time spent on travelling and duplication of effort, which ultimately helps them in prepare more efficiently for a good rank in the exam.

Q WHAT SHOULD MY STRATEGY BE FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS PREPARATION?

Ideally, one should understand all concepts across all the subjects well before the exam date and leave the last few months for test preparation and revision of specific concepts as required. Depending up on which topics need to be revised, students can refer to the textbook for that topic as well as specialised study material.

Q DOES AIEEE/MHT CET REQUIRE SEPARATE PREPARATION FROM IITJEE?

The syllabus of all these competitive exams comprises of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics of class 11 and 12. Hence, apart from minor topic changes, there is a large overlap in the syllabus of all subjects for IIT JEE/ AIEEE/ MHT CET and infact the board exams too. Thus, one can prepare for all exams simultaneously by keeping in mind the nuances of each type of exam.

Q HOW CAN I MONITOR MY PERFORMANCE ON AN ONGOING BASIS?

Monitoring performance continuously is one of the most critical aspects of preparing for competitive exams. Students can assess their performance by evaluating themselves through an All India Test Series (AITS) which will provide them their performance relative to students all across the country. Students should choose an AITS which is set by teachers with vast IIT JEE experience or by ex-IITians as they have the best knowledge of the type of questions typically seen in the IITJEE. Speed and accuracy are the two key components of the strategy required for best results in competitive exams, hence students should time themselves while writing practice tests.
